Early on I thought of Jaco as just an amazing bass player, but the more I learned about him the more I appreciated what he did for bass playing and jazz in general. Wayne Shorter made a comment about how Jaco could have released some pop albums and made a bunch of money, but he preferred to work on the kind of music that interested him and really pushed the boundaries of jazz. He wasn't interested in selling out, even if it could have been easy money. I understand that even though he was basically homeless at the end of his life, his wife Ingrid was able to work with a lawyer to ensure his estate received royalties on all his music so at least his family was financially taken care of after his passing.

Brilliant....soulful....magical....and inspiring with endless ideas and emotions!

What a marvellous homage! Thank you so much for this great and deeply touching documentary!

I wandered here through the final song on the Jaco Pastorius tribute featuring Eliez, which I though a strange choice, but delightful. Superb music, thank you. I’m turning 80 and just learning about music though I’ve played it all my life. Even losing a lot of my hearing, I can hear this and am learning to appreciate it as well. Thank you.

great stuff, thanks. but there are two musicians i miss in this documentation. at first richard bona who i saw in 2002 at frankfurt alte oper along with pat metheny playing three songs from bright size live in a mind blowing way, and then percy jones, who had a very special way playing the fretless bass.

Lost lot of respect for Marcus Miller watching this …and gained oodles more for Jaco…and Pete Erskine. Just light years ahead. Zawinul showing up as a moron also with his comments on Jaco’s mental health issue affecting band. Just crap from MM and ZW on many levels.

Wow! What a documentary! I'm embarrassed to say that I don't know that much of Jaco's music, only a bit through his collaborations with Pat Metheny and Joni Mitchell. Please could somebody identify that lovely piece of music that is playing near the end when Joe Z is speaking - just before the "In Loving Memory" part. Thank you, much appreciated.

I appreciate the fact that he said, don’t try to replicate his style. Creating your own style is the key to enjoying it.

I would hit like a thousand times if possible. The only thing missing (which I maybe understand why) is a bit more about his time with Pat Metheny, which I believe was the real start for this legend. Anyway, thanks a lot for this tear-inducing piece of music history.

1967, I was a 15 year old drummer in a NYC band. Late 67, mom moved us to Ft Lauderdale. I attended Northeast high, and met some guys in a band. That’s when I met Jaco. I think at the time he was in a local band called Las Olas Brass. His drummer lived next door to a kid I met, and one day while the band took a break, I asked the drummer if I could play his set. He was very kind, and generous, and said “Sure.” I started tapping away, when Jaco starts playing his bass. We jammed for a while. I lent Jaco my Fresh Cream album, don’t think I ever got it back. Lol. I like to think I turned Jaco on to Jack Bruce. I hated Florida and left home before my 17th birthday to return to NYC. I remember reading about Jaco’s rise in some newspapers and magazines. I was sad when I read about his death. The Jaco I knew was straight as an arrow. No weed, no beer. He just enjoyed music and the beach. Thanks for the music, Jaco.
